Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What does a house clearance involve?
House clearance is a service which entails clearing unwanted items from either part of, or an entire house. People use house clearance services when they have too many items to clear by themselves, or when they want to clear a specific room or area from clutter, such as a garage, shed, attic, or basement.
Do you have to pay for a house clearance?
House clearance companies all have their own ways of charging and different prices for the services they offer. Some will charge you per volume, others by weight, and others may agree a one-off flat fee. As a guide, the cost of house clearance will depend on the rough quantity of items that you need to get rid of.
Who is responsible for a house clearance after death?
The responsibility of dealing with the deceased's property falls to the Executor (when there's a Will) or the Administrator (when there's no Will). This means that if anything happens to the property after the owner dies, they are responsible for resolving the issue.
How long do you have to clear a house if someone dies?
You'll need to clear the home of all the deceased's property and hand in the keys at the end of the notice period. This is usually four weeks, but if you need longer speak to the landlord. For Housing Executive and housing association homes, you may only have a week to clear out the property and hand back the keys.
Can a house be cleared before probate?
Whilst the Executors are able to collect or clear items from a property before Probate is granted, there are some potential issues which should be considered first. The Executors are personally responsible for ensuring the estate is dealt with properly and in accordance with the deceased's will.
